A unique road event takes place this weekend in the high mountains of the Pyrenees – The Red Bull Road Rage. Instead of a hill climb, the race is a descent with racers aiming to be the quickest down the mountain – a road downhill event.
100 competitors will take to the start with initial seeding runs leading to a 4cross style finale. Taking part of Ireland is 31 year old former downhiller Janos Köhler.
Janos grew up cycling mountain bikes in the Wicklow mountains in the early 90′s. A series of encouraging underage and Junior results in the fledgling Irish DH scene (when 3 inches on the front and none on the back was a downhill machine). Back in the heady days of the start of downhill Janos came 2nd (Junior) in the inaugural Irish Downhill Championships. His times consistently would have been competitive podium placings in the elite catagory.
A series of big injuries meant that his downhill career stalled before it could really get started. Recently focusing on endurance events such as the Ötztaler cycle marathon a 238km race over the Alps in Austria and Italy (where he broke the speed trap with the fastest speed of anyone… a touch over 115kph), Janos, with the help of Mick Jordan of The Cycle Inn, has decided to dust off the body armour and try his hand at the Red Bull Road Rage event in the Pyrenees. Lining up along-side the downhill mountain bike legend Cédric Gracia and Tour de France Stage winners Frédéric Moncassin and Cédric Vasseur, along with previous podium finishers of the Red Bull Road Rage events in Italy and Switzerland Guillaume Gualandy and Fred Mazières, Janos will finally realise his dream of competing with the best on the steepest slopes in Europe.
