Hincapie rode 4 stages with broken collarbone

July 29th, 2009 · No Comments

It seems this is the year to break your collarbone.  American Columbia rider George Hincapie broke his collarbone on stage 17 of the Tour, July 22nd.

Despite the break he rode on to the finish 4 stages later in support of Mark Cavendish who won 2 stages after the break.  Hincapie refused to have an x-ray, doubtless knowing what had happened and not wanting to stop.

This is not the first time someone has ridden with a broken collarbone.  American Tyler Hamilton famously rode almost an entire Tour with a broken collarbone but Hincapie’s achievement is non the less pretty amazing.  He finished 19th on GC.
