Well it’s all over for another year.  After 3,459.5 kilometres the yellow jersey rests on the shoulders of Spaniard Alberto Contador with the most impressive winning margins since 2005.Along the way Contador collected 3 stage wins, two on mountain stages and one in the time trial around Lake Annecy on Thursday.  It was a herculean effort for the team which also claimed 3rd for Lance Armstrong and 6th for Andreas Kloden. Astana were dominant taking the team prize with a roster of all stars which impressed greatly in the three weeks.  Even more amazing is that they left riders at home who would have been guaranteed a Tour start on form on any other team and lost one of their star riders (Levi Leipheimer) to a broken wrist just when they needed him the most heading into week 3.  As a result Contador and Armstrong had to protect themselves more than they had anticipated but it was a challenge that both rose to with ease.

Speaking after the race to Velonews, Contador admitted their had been tension in the team between the two and that while he had respect for him on a professional level he had no respect for him personal level.  The two will line up as rivals and possibly joint favourites next year but more of that latter in the week.

In second place was Andy Schleck of Team Saxo bank, the young Luxembourger worked hard in the last week to try and shake of Contador.  Aided by brother Frank they tried unsuccessfully to break the Spaniard who clung to them like glue on stage 17 on Wednesday.  Schlecks consolation prize is the White jersey for young riders.  Next year he will be back to chalenge Contador, a year wiser and stronger.

In fourth place was the revelation of the Tour, Bradley Wiggins of Garmin.  Known as a prolific track rider Wiggins had failed to make a mark on the road world until his move over the winter to Garmin where he has flourished and with the injuries to team leader Christian VandeVelde 9who still managed 8th) he was given free reign to ride.  Amazing stages saw him finish ahead of Armstrong and with the favourites and many are excited about his future prospects as he matures.  Of course there is also the huge question of whether he will join the new British Pro-Tour team run by Sky but for now it looks like he will stay put.

His countryman Mark Cavendish took the final stage win in Paris with a consummate display which saw his leadout man Mark Renshaw finish 2nd.  The Manxman now has 6 wins this year in the Tour and would have taken the Green jersey only for his relegation for blocking Thor Hushovd on stage 14.  Hushovd takes the green for the second time and is undoubtedly a worthy champion.  He used his head to hoover up valuable points on the road at intermediate sprint bonuses.

The Climbers jersey goes to Italian France Pellizotti of Liquigas with a fantastic performance which also saw him take the combativity prize.

That prize could have gone to Ireland’s Nicolas Roche who was ever active, finishing a credible 23rd in his first Tour de France.  Had his team AG2R not held the yellow jersey for so long he might have done more but spent many days on protection duty for the maillot jeune.  Roche was unlucky not to take a stage with two 2nd places and many top 10’s.  He too will benefit from another year to mature but showed good signs for the future.

The Tour may be over but the season certainly isn’t.  Ahead are many smaller races and the Vuelta along with the Tour of Ireland which will see many top riders spending three days riding from Dublin to Cork.  Among them will be Mark Cavendish and Lance Armstrong in what is sure to be some exciting racing with the fearsome Patricks Hill awaiting the Peloton on the final day.   Stay tuned for more.
