News Flash - 2 positives from the Olympics (Updated)

April 28th, 2009 · No Comments

The Associated Press are reporting that six athletes have tested positive from tests gathered at the Olympic Games - two cyclists, three track and field athletes and one weightlifter.  One of the track and field athletes is rumoured to be a gold medalist and La Gazzetta dello Sport is reporting that one of the positive cyclists is Silver medalist Davide Rebellin (now confirmed by the Italian Federation).

The Italian is a former Gerolsteiner rider and former teammate of Stefan Schumacher who tested positive for CERA last year.  Rebellin won the Fleche-Wallone classic last week for the third time in a row.  The Italian Olympic Committee have admitted that one of the cyclists is Italian.  All the Olympians have apparently tested positive for CERA too, the new form of EPO.  CERA was developed for kidney patients as it boosts red blood cells.  The drug is easily detected with a blood test and many cyclists have been caught using it including Ricardo Ricco.  We will bring you confirmation of the athletes as soon as we have it.

UPDATE -

On Wednesday the Italian federation confirmed that it is Davide Rebellin who tested positive on his A Sample.  He has been immediately suspended and called before a hearing and his team has also suspended him.

The other rider has been confirmed by the German federation as Stefan Schumacher, who was Rebellins teammate at the time at Gerolsteiner.  Schumacher is currently appealing a two year suspension imposed following his positive test form the 2008 Tour de France.

Both riders have been asked whether they want the B-Samples tested.  Rebellin seems set to contest the charge and ask for the sample to be opened.

As to the other athletes, the AFP press agency has identified one of the three track and field athletes as Rashid Ramzi of Bahrain.  Ramzi won the gold medal in the 1500-metre race.
